Denny’s look back at 100 years of hospitality work wear
May 16, 2011
Denny’s Uniforms, the UK’s premier catering clothing supplier have records going back 100 years. At that time Denny’s Uniforms manufactured their uniforms at a factory called Wheelers of Plaistow in London where hotel and catering clothing was produced up until the 1970’s.
Take a look at the top selling apron of the time, which was certainly more voluminous than the styles of today. Compare the very formal, turn of the century style to today’s kitchen attire which is looser, lighter and a lot more colourful. The major change is the move away from 100% cotton to polyester mixes for longer life and easier care. And moustaches aren’t de rigueur anymore either!
Aprons have always provided an economical and versatile uniform for busy environments such as coffee shops and bars. They are easy to wear, one size fits all, durable and easy to wash without the need for laundering bills. Aprons were originally worn as a utilitarian outer garment to cover the front of the body to protect the wearer’s clothes from soiling, wear and tear. Over the years many different styles of aprons evolved depending on its purpose, and were often named after the trade, craft or profession that used that particular design.
Today, Denny’s Uniforms carry the largest stock range of aprons in the UK and offer many alternatives in the same colour, with a choice of 80 different colour ways and 600 different styles.
Denny’s Uniforms apron range includes bib aprons, waterproof aprons, full length aprons, bar aprons, Le Chef aprons and Long Life aprons.
