Food Hygiene Rating Scheme Update

Northern Ireland will be moving forward with mandatory display (approx. 2 years to implementation). The position in England remains unchanged with only Rutland still refusing to join the scheme. The FSA continue to push to get businesses to display rating – research suggests that only 50% of 5-rated businesses are displaying their ratings. In Scotland, measures are in place for ministers to potentially introduce mandatory display.

At the last meeting of the BHA Food experts Group members gave examples of appeals that they have made and it was suggested that there is a need for more independence for the appeals procedure. Some members had come across Local Authorities that had issued additional guidance on carrying out ratings to their EHOs which can result in inconsistencies. We will raise these issues with the FSA.
