The George and Dragon in Cumbria is a beautiful country estate inn with a restaurant, bar and rooms. Each of the twelve en-suite bedrooms is individually designed with paintings and furniture chosen from the Lowther family’s own collection. They contain beautiful crewel work materials, quality linens and very comfortable beds.
An 18th century coaching inn, located in a quiet village on the edge of the Lake District National Park, the George and Dragon has been lovingly restored by local craftsman who have reused stone, slate flags, designs and colours sympathetic to the Georgian period.
Comfy sofas, bare wooden tables and intimate alcoves make it a perfect place to relax and unwind and photographs, paintings, old prints and archive images tell stories of the Lowther Estate’s unique heritage. And over time, more stories will be added.
When you visit the George and Dragon in Clifton, you can enjoy a pint of local ale, relax with a glass of fine wine and indulge in the Lowther produce, feeling that you’re somewhere rather unique.
What makes the George and Dragon so special is that its source of inspiration, history, passion and produce comes from the extensive Lowther Estate, right on its doorstep, where the Lowther family has been producing food for more than 800 years. With a philosophy of sustainability, simplicity and taste; the fresh ingredients, sourced from within 20 miles of the pub (and the vast majority from within just two or three), are presented thoughtfully, simply and honestly.
