SALSA Food Safety Scheme attracts over 1,000 small producers in just eight years to become market leader.
SALSA, the food safety scheme for the smaller producer was founded just 8 years ago in 2007 and is a non-profit joint venture between the main trade associations representing the UK food chain the British Hospitality Association, the British Retail Consortium, the National Farmers Union, and the Food and Drink Federation. In the first six months, it attracted 115 members and as of 1st February 2015, its membership now exceeds 1,000 small producers. Of these, over 800 hold SALSA certification.
Wide acceptance of the SALSA Scheme and its unique standard has also led to more than 650 UK buyers – including leading supermarkets, food service and catering suppliers such as Asda, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Compass, 3663 and the NHS ̶ actively using SALSA to search out and contact smaller suppliers who can fill a niche, add interest or supply locally made products.
The success of the Scheme lies in providing a robust certification as well as meeting the many and varied needs of the smaller UK supplier. SALSA membership and associated services, including mentoring, continue to be both affordable and relevant to smaller producers which may not have access to the in-house technical resources and advice they need to ensure safe and legal food and drink production.
SALSA Scheme Manager, Sally Ball, says: “We are delighted with the continuing success of SALSA. Having 1000 members is a real milestone for the Scheme. SALSA has become the natural choice for the smaller producer – and a thriving marketplace ̶ through which national buyers can find the assured suppliers they are looking for.”
Sally adds: “We want to provide our members with all the services and support they need; the stepping stones which help smaller businesses achieve certification, with approval often being the key to opening new doors and concluding new contracts. We also believe there is plenty of room for more growth: we have further exciting times ahead with the launch of a new Food Labelling service and a Brewery module later in the year!”
