What to do if your business has been affected by flooding

Flood YorkThe BHA is thinking about all hospitality and tourism businesses across the North of England and Scotland who have been affected by flooding, which could not have come at a worse time as we all gear up for the Christmas and New Year rush.

Dr Lisa Ackerley, Food and Hygiene Expert at the British Hospitality Association said: “As an industry we must act quickly to reassure visitors and remind customers intending to stay in the area to check the lastest situation with their accommodation. Hospitality is an industry where people pull out all the stops to provide a great guest experience no matter what, like one of our BHA members in the Lake District who was affected by the floods but still managed to serve 90 covers the very next day. We echo calls from our Cumbrian members to ask the Government to allocate funding to enable our industry in Cumbria to get back on its feet as quickly as possible. It would be particularly helpful for hospitality businesses if the government could reintroduce the scheme to delay tax payments, including PAYE, VAT and business rates for those affected by flooding."

What to do if your business has been affected by flooding?

Floodwater could be contaminated with sewage, harmful bacteria and viruses, animal, and chemical waste. As such, it could contaminate food, equipment and the structure of your business.

To make sure your business and customers are protected, the BHA have put together some measures to get you up and running as quickly and safely as possible. This is not a definitive list, but contains key points that will fit most circumstances.

If you are in any doubt about what to do, contact your Environmental Health Department. If you can’t get advice quickly, then err on the side of caution. Always check with your insurance company before disposing of anything to make sure you are covered. It is a good idea to take photographs of the damage and waste.
