Following three years at Catering College, Darryl began his career in hospitality working for The Brend Hotel Group, the West Country’s leading privately owned collection of four star hotels throughout Devon and Cornwall. Various management roles were held at several locations, predominantly in the front of house food and beverage areas, including banqueting and large events.

Having been offered his first General Management position at the prime age of 24 years old, Falmouth’s highest rated hotel was his home turf for a number of very enjoyable years. The management of outside catering events were common place at the nearby Pendennis and St.Mawes castles (English Heritage) as well as one or two events at the nearly built Falmouth University. On one occasion this included a once in a lifetime opportunity to lead and deliver a luncheon for HM The Queen and Prince Phillip along with invited guests under very interesting conditions!

Being keen to better understand the finer aspects of running successful hotels, such as budgetary mechanisms, rooms revenue management and forecasting processes, as well as strategic sales and marketing planning; Darryl joined the von Essen Collection of Hotels for a couple of years between 2009 and 2011 to manage Fowey Hall. Fowey Hall is a beautiful Baroque mansion overlooking one of the most picturesque coastal towns to be found anywhere in England, a property which had previously been owned and operated by Luxury Family Hotels.

In 2011, Darryl joined The Headland in Newquay Cornwall. One of the largest hotels in the region and privately owned for the past 36 years, with 96 bedrooms and suites but also 39 self-catering cottages. The hotel is a 4 Silver Star property, the cottages have a 5 star rating from the AA and in recent years the addition of the most luxurious Headland Spa was awarded a 5 Bubble rating by The Good Spa Guide soon after opening.

The Headland has won and continues to win numerous awards over recent years and is considered to be one of the leading hotels in the southwest. The hotel employs 170 staff including two Catey winners, holds Gold membership from Investors in People. Recent team successes have included an in-house Talent Development Programme, Leadership and Strategy and Development workshops and currently, the development of a ‘POP’ programme designed to develop young people who are showing specific promise in the future. Darryl is a Director on BID in Newquay.
