I was born and raised on our family farm at Headlam in County Durham where the family have been for four generations. As well as farming my parents started Headlam Hall Hotel in the late 1970’s, initially on a low key basis but growing the business over the years. I attended Hurworth Prep School and then Barnard Castle School where I sat my ‘O’ Levels and ‘A’ Levels. I then took a year out to travel to the USA where I spent time working on a farm in Texas before returning to the UK to complete the year working on the family farm and in the hotel gardens.
I then spent 3 years studying Economics at Plymouth University where I attained a BSc. I then took another year out to travel in Australia, New Zealand and the USA before returning home to start work in the family business. Headlam Hall was now a growing concern and I initially took a behind the scenes role that combined accounts and maintenance. As the years progressed I took on more responsibilities becoming managing director in 2002. Since then I have overseen the development of a golf course and spa at the hotel as well as the purchase of the Rose & Crown in Romaldkirk in 2012, a small but high quality hotel located 15 miles up the dale from Headlam. I am married to Cheryl, who now runs the Rose & Crown on a day-to-day basis.
