The Hospitality Economy Proposition

The BHA are proud to present two reports – one produced by Oxford Economics which highlights the size and scope of the UK hospitality industry – and the second, produced internally, which emphasises the hospitality industry’s potential to generate a further 236,000 jobs by 2015.

We believe that this target is feasible and attainable, but government policies and actions can make or break it.

Our report, The Hospitality Economy Proposition, highlights the need for a partnership with government and puts forward a number of recommendations to government – and BHA commitments – which will help the industry meet this target.

The BHA are delighted to have joined with report partners American Express, LG Electronics, Nestle Professional and Philips Lighting to publish these important findings.

“It is very encouraging to see a well established association take such a strong position on the important issues that are affecting us all. Looking at how the hospitality industry contributes to the country’s wealth, and how the BHA can work with government to sustain the industry’s growth. Sustainability and energy efficiency being key areas where the BHA can support their membership to save money, improve services to their customers and help deliver the government’s carbon reduction commitment. LG fully supports the BHA in this endeavour.”

“The findings of the two reports (entitled ‘Creating Jobs in Britain – A Hospitality Economy Proposition’ and ‘Economic contribution of the UK hospitality industry’ ) once again underlines the importance of the hospitality and tourism industry and People 1st is delighted to have made a significant contribution.   The complexity and fragmentation of this industry reinforces the need for a collaborative approach between industry bodies so that the sector’s contribution to employment and the economy continue to be understood and appropriately supported by Government and their officials.”
Simon C V Tarr, Chief Operating Officer, People 1st

“Over the past 40 years the U.K. hospitality industry has grown predominantly as a result of independent and uncoordinated initiatives aimed at capitalising on a host of opportunities.   But the industry is very much in a highly competitive, global industry.  Now, we need to act in partnership.

I visit many countries throughout the year with the prime objective of promoting and selling London and the UK and I am confronted with more and more challenges in persuading buyers of travel to select our destination over others.

At last, we have a consolidated report that demonstrates the huge contribution this industry makes to the UK’s economy and employment opportunities.  This proves the value of a coordinated hospitality and tourism strategy for the UK.  If we can work together to make our industry more competitive, hospitality in the UK will be able to capture a growing share of the unprecedented expansion of global travel.  This is a most valuable study.”
