For 20 years, Terry Farr has been at the helm of Friends. The latest Rosette plate for 2013, has just arrived from the AA, (the 19th successive year!) They say, in The Restaurant Guide 2013, “The name is fair indication of the warmth of the welcome, and what’s on the menu is traditional heartwarming French fare, enlivened with some modern combinations.” The 2013 Michelin Guide, also for the 19th year, says, “Pretty beamed cottage, with some parts dating back 400 years. Inside a welcoming glow from the log fire; personal service from owners and a fresh, regularly-changing menu.”
Terry has recently introduced a new Grill Menu, reflecting on his early career spent at The Connaught and The Savoy, alongside the ever popular seasonally changing set menus. The wine list has a new look with some new acquisitions and in line with his enthusiastic support of English wines, these are available by the glass, alongside several others on the house selection.
As a senior sous chef, he was highly regarded for his encouragement of young trainees and apprentices at The Savoy, (1969-1975) and this is borne out by the way he continues to bring on local youngsters in the kitchen and restaurant. Other reminders of his early years are dishes such as Omelette Arnold Bennett, created for the famous writer, when he was resident there, and is currently on the menu at Friends and has been consistently on The Savoy menu, even now at the newly refurbished hotel.
Friends’ approach to good food is based on simplicity. The best, freshest ingredients, are prepared well, and cooked simply. Regular visits to Smithfield and Billingsgate, ensure freshness and quality. Whenever possible, local produce is sourced, and vegetables, produced and grown in the area, often by the clientele! The wines are selected to reflect the taste of the grape variety and are produced by artisans, usually relatively small estates. Terry is also a proud supporter of the English wine producers, notably the award winning wines of the Kenton Estate Vineyard on the South facing slopes west of the Exe Estuary in South Devon, and the Brightwell Vineyard, the largest in Oxfordshire, on the beautiful banks of the Thames in Wallingford. Their wines feature on the list.
