Fergus Henderson and Trevor Gulliver opened St. JOHN in October 1994.
St. JOHN is open for lunch in the dining room Monday to Friday between noon and 3.00 pm and on Sunday from 1.00 pm until 3.30 pm.
Supper is served from 6.00 pm to 11.00 pm Monday to Saturday.
Our bar opens from 11.00 am to 11.00 pm during the week, as per the dining room on Saturdays and from noon to 5.00 pm on Sundays. There is always a full bar menu.
This former smokehouse situated by London’s Smithfield Market had fallen into serious disrepair since ham and bacon smoking ceased in 1967 and it was shown to Trevor as a pretty much derelict building in early 1994.
The Georgian building is part Grade II listed townhouse and part smokehouse (this part having been built later over the townhouse gardens) and following its abandonment had been used variously and in no particular order as a squat, a greenhouse for harvesting bean sprouts, a Chinese beer store and for the occasional rave.
The upper floors of the building, now our administration, managerial and directors’ offices had even been the headquarters of Marxism Today during the late 1960′s.
If you visit St. John you’ll find the building pretty much as it was found. We’ve painted the walls white, installed a bar and a bakery in two of the chimneys and a kitchen, dining room and private dining room in the former packing rooms and topped the bar with 20-foot high skylights.
We opened St JOHN Bread & Wine in Spitalfields in May 1993 and our Druid Street Bakery (open to the public every Saturday) in Bermondsey in November 2010. The first vintage from our winery in the Minervois, 2011, was released in May 2013.
