Located on the corner of Duke Street and Jermyn Street in the heart of Mayfair, The Cavendish London stands on the very site of the original Cavendish hotel, whose most famous owner was the redoubtable Rosa Lewis, better known as the “The Duchess of Jermyn Street”. The present building was opened as hotel in 1966, when it was considered one of the most modern hotels of its kind at the time. It is therefore fitting that the hotel continues this tradition of a contemporary and stylish hotel that sits comfortably with its history.

The Cavendish Hotel London in Mayfair was acquired by a subsidiary of Ellerman Investments Limited on 15 September 2006.


Sustainablity has its own place in the core values of the hotel.  Rather than have a green team, we wanted to have a green workforce, with over 100 ambassadors ensuring that the hotel acts appropriately and continues to drive sustainability through all working practices.

The Cavendish London was recently placed 35th in the Sunday Times ’100 Best Small Companies to Work For’ – the only hotel on the list of small companies and the only hotel to achieve 3 star accreditation for being an ‘extraordinary employer’. The results for The Cavendish London increased year on year with an overall increase of +6% from 2010 to 2011.

At The Cavendish London, it starts with recruitment. We have a good name in the industry and have built good relationships with schools, colleges and universities because of the student placements we offer. We also run a refer a friend scheme and when hiring for a lot of our positions we look at their personality and their attitude and values and whether they will fit into our Cavendish team, above specific skills that we can train. A fit into our culture is more important.

We are very proud of the training and development opportunities available at the Cavendish and we often send staff to look at our competitor hotels and restaurants, for example our Petrichor restaurant team are aiming for a second rosette so we’re taking the team out to similar restaurants to learn from the experience and to ensure everyone is aware of what we want to achieve and what it looks like.

We invest in staff training, using our senior team to deliver customer service training, as well as external suppliers like Westminster Kingsway College and Learnpurple. We also run an internal mentoring programme to develop staff for their future careers.

We believe that recognition is crucial. For example we award £10 shopping vouchers for good customer feedback, and our staff can nominate their colleagues for awards too. Our Managing Director Ciaran Fahy sends a handwritten letter with every award to show his appreciation for them going beyond their job role and really living the Hotel Values.

Everything we do at The Cavendish is centred around our vision, values and our balanced scorecard targets, which are communicated to everyone. Our managers also have regular one-to-ones with their staff so that everyone is constantly reminded of their targets and given feedback on how they’re doing.

Our staff are all given a day off to help ‘give something back’ recently 10 staff took part in a charity skydive and a further 3 completed an abseil down the side of St Guy’s hospital. Our next event is Race for Life when 10 of ‘The Cavendish Girls’ are running a 5K race in Hyde Park to raise money for Cancer Research. We also have parties, recognition awards, monthly themed lunches and our hotel football team.
