On the evening of Monday 4 April 2016, Ken McMeikan, Group Chief Executive, Brakes Group, will take to the stage in the ballroom of the iconic Savoy Hotel to address foodservice and hospitality industry colleagues at the Arena Savoy Lecture 2016.
Foodservice giant Brakes Group is the market leader in UK foodservice and the second largest in both France and Sweden. An influential character in the dynamic £30bn-plus wholesale sector, Ken McMeikan will discuss the shape of the Brakes business, the wholesale market and the wider industry, and the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Three years ago Ken McMeikan made the transition from retail to foodservice, leaving his role as CEO of Greggs PLC to assume control of Brakes Group. And, what an impact he has made in that time.
Under his leadership, Brakes Group has experienced a period of significant transformation and investment: sales have increased by over £0.5bn; operations have expanded from four to six countries; new markets and sectors have been unlocked; the employee base has increased by 50%; the joint venture with Fresh Direct was created, accelerating growth in the fastest growing part of the market.
Ken is also the driving force behind the charitable ‘Meals and More’ programme, a nationwide community initiative, supported by leading food companies, aimed at providing tasty, nutritious meals and enrichment activities outside of school for the one in four children currently living in poverty across the UK.
