What is Springboard's FutureChef?

Springboard’s FutureChef helps young people aged 12-16 to learn to cook. It inspires them to explore food and cooking as a life skill by developing their culinary talent and informing them about entry routes into the hospitality industry. FutureChef was developed as a result of research findings into young people’s perceptions of the industry. The research revealed that young people regard chefs such as Brian Turner, Gary Rhodes and James Martin almost as highly as pop or television stars. Surprisingly, however, few genuinely considered a career as a chef! FutureChef addresses these perceptions directly by introducing young people to cooking, helping to develop their skills, developing direct work experience in the industry and providing expert advice on the career options and entry routes available. It provides teachers and young people alike with a wonderful insight into what it’s like to be a chef and the related career opportunities.

2012 is the twelfth year of Springboard’s FutureChef and has seen the four staged competition evolve into a programme which is aimed at supporting the curriculum further with on-going interventions direct from the Hospitality Industry.

There are two ways to get involved

FutureChef - The Competition gives the opportunity for a young talented student to be crowned Springboard’s FutureChef winner! There are four stages so take a look at The Competition page for further details.

FutureChef – The Programme builds on the competition providing various modules including:

  • Look and Learn - Chef Demonstrations
  • Have a Go - Skills Challenges
  • Work Experience
  • Careers presentations
  • Learning Bites

all of which can be delivered as part of the class room curriculum – helping promote the industry as a great place to work!

Both elements provide opportunities for links to be built directly with the hospitality industry either a Chef, Human Resource Professional, Springboard Ambassadors or individuals from local FE colleges can provide valuable interventions which not only promote the organisations they represent but also support the curriculum. This can lead to extensive opportunities for careers led sessions, work experience and/or employment when applicable.

For this long established Competition and Programme over 55,000 students have taken part and many of those have formed Springboard’s FutureChef Alumni. Fulfilling employment within the Hospitality Industry these individuals continue to promote the programme, raise their profile amongst their peers and display the fantastic opportunities in the industry that await young people.
