The BHA would like to congratulate its members Waterscan and hospitality giant Whitbread Group for dedication in leading water sustainability by scooping the ‘Water Management’ prize during a prestigious ceremony at the Sustainability Leaders Awards in London.
Organised by edie, the awards recognise and reward those that are leading their industries through their commitment to sustainable business practices. Now in their eighth year, the Sustainability Leaders Awards have gone from strength to strength, mirroring the increasing emphasis business is putting on sustainable operations.
The joint submission focussed on water being a key element of Whitbread Group’s CR plan ‘Good Together’ and the initiatives implemented as part of Waterscan’s strategic plan for the company. A reduction in excess of 21% from a 2009 baseline was achieved, with an increased target of a 25% reduction now in sight. Greywater recycling was a key element of the project and contributed an average reduction in hotel potable water use of 30% when compared to the water consumption of a similar hotel.
“We were particularly taken by the scale of greywater recycling demonstrated across such a large business. A commitment to greywater recycling at such a corporate level is very bold. Whitbread should be commended for the breadth of their commitment across many aspects of water-saving and impressive transparency, tackling both existing and new premises on all fronts over a sustained period is impressive” said the esteemed judging panel.
Nick Hayes, Commercial Director of Waterscan added, “Winning the award is a great acknowledgment of the work Waterscan is doing to create a sustainable water future for our clients. Whitbread has shown great commitment to addressing their water usage and deserve full credit for making water sustainability a priority.”
