Chartered Environmental Health Practitioner Dr Lisa Ackerley is an independent safety consultant providing advice and support to most food industry sectors and to the mass media on food safety issues.
She is the Food Safety Adviser, British Hospitality Association, visiting Professor of Environmental Health at Salford University and has lectured on the MSc Environmental Health Course at Kings College, University of London. She is also a Professorial Fellow of the RSPH. Lisa is passionate about spreading the message about food safety in easy practical terms, to allow everyone to understand how simple it is to get hygiene right.
Having qualified in 1984, Lisa worked as an EHO in local government before taking up a post as senior lecturer in Food Law and Practice at Thames Polytechnic (now University of Greenwich). During this time she completed her PhD (Consumer Awareness of Food Poisoning) at Birmingham University in 1990 and was awarded a Winston Churchill Fellowship to research HACCP in the USA and Canada.
After the acquisition of her business Hygiene Audit Systems Ltd by Acoura (www.acoura.com), she is now Strategic Adviser to their Board. In addition, she is Food Safety Adviser to the British Hospitality Association and Specialist Food Safety Adviser at the Royal Society of Public Health. As an expert witness, Lisa has worked on many cases including appearing as a Crown Witness to the John Barr Fatal Accident Inquiry, and as a witness to the E.coli Fatal Accident Inquiry in Paisley (2009).
Lisa is still hands-on; for example, she had her white coat on, leading a team of inspectors for a prestigious client project during the 2012 Olympics and carries out specialist training projects and forensic auditing as requested by clients.
In 2011 Lisa was presented with “The most Significant Contribution to Food Safety Award” from the Society of Food Hygiene Technology.
Lisa appears regularly as a food safety expert on TV and Radio, including BBC 1 Rogue Restaurants, BBC Watchdog, Radio 2 Chris Evans show, GMTV, BBC Panorama, Watchdog, Sky News and BBC, and Channel 4 News, Channel 5. She was the hotel inspector in Miami and Portugal on the BBC1 series Holiday Hit Squad.
